A French fortysomething career woman meets an attractive Finnish DJ in a hotel in a strange country. Alcohol is consumed and a bed is shared. When it is time to part ways, a volcanic ashcloud sees fit to halt the flight traffic for all of North-Eastern Europe. The premise might sound clichéd, but what at first seems like a story set in the traditional parameters of a romantic narrative, grows into a modern depiction of two adults who, having accomplished their career goals, now pause to think if other sectors in their lives might need further attention.
2 Nights Till Morning, subtly written and directed by Mikko Kuparinen, does not revert to obvious conclusions. The main characters don't have to explain away every single thing they are feeling, but the chemistry between Mikko Nousiainen ja Marie-Josée Croze (The Barbarian Invasions) rather works best when nothing needs to be said. And if it seems like there's nothing to talk about, you can always reach for a phone. Connecting people, you know. (LH)
